IS THERE LIFE WITHOUT BREAD AND PASTA?

I grew up with a fork in one hand and a piece of bread in the other. And in between the fork and the bread was pasta or potatoes. I am a Canadian with a rich Italian-Irish heritage.

I’m sure you’ve heard of the benefits of the Mediterranean diet and there are many to be sure. I grew up eating the Canadian version of that diet, minus the year round fresh vegetables and fresh fish. My diet consisted of root vegetables, preserves, meat, bread, pasta, potatoes, oatmeal, cream of wheat, red river cereal, pasta, pasta, and did I mention bread?! In other words refined carbs and plenty of them. Now let’s not kid ourselves, these things are delicious and didn’t get to be called comfort food for nothing. Alas, they also fill your sugar bowl as Dr. Jason Fung would say.

“My diet consisted of bread, pasta, potatoes, oatmeal, cream of wheat, red river cereal, pasta, pasta, and did I mention bread?!”

So let’s have a moment of silence for bread and pasta as we once knew it. Joking aside, you can indulge in a piece of bread or a fistful of pasta once in awhile, after you’ve emptied your sugar bowl and reset your metabolism.

GOOD NEWS! There is a wealth of delicious satiating food out there. And a whole new world of bread and cookies made with almond flour! Imagine, if you will:

THEN
NOW

What once was a staple has been replaced by a bounty of fantastic flavours

I’m adding a recipe page to this blog just as soon as I can figure out how! For now, look up paleo cookbooks, Dr. Atkins and True Food for some wonderful inspiration for your palette. Oh, and by the way, I feel better now than I have in many many years.

Next up Intermittent Fasting?????
